Older & Bolder believe that a successful National Positive Ageing Strategy (NPAS) is essential to making Ireland a better place in which to grow older. Older & Bolder welcome the Minister for Older People Áine Brady’s announcement that the Government will be conducting consultation meetings with older people about the strategy beginning in Cork on 4 March and Sligo on 11 March.  Older & Bolder believes that in order to ensure a successful strategy the promised consultation meetings must be extensive, meaningful and inclusive.

For further details on the criteria for effective public consultation you can download our Baseline Statement on a National Positive Ageing Strategy for Ireland here (PDF 276 KB).

During 2010 Older & Bolder will continue to work to positively influence the development of the National Positive Ageing Strategy . The strategy is being developed by a Cross-Departmental Group, chaired by the Director of the Office for Older People. The membership of this group is composed of officials from ten Government Departments and the Central Statistics Office. Older & Bolder are members of a Liaison Group of Non Governmental Organisations which has been established to assist the Cross Departmental Group in its work to develop the strategy.

About the National Positive Ageing Strategy

The National Positive Ageing Strategy is a long-term plan for making Ireland a better place in which to grow older. This blueprint will involve all levels of Government from Ministers to city and county councils. It will cover policies, services and practices in areas such as health care, housing, transport, income, employment and independent living. The National Positive Ageing Strategy will also influence the activities of organisations in the private and voluntary sectors.

The key benefit of a national strategy is that it gives all of the Government departments who have a responsibility for older people's welfare a shared focus for planning and working together. This means that policy makers and service planners with responsibilities for different areas such as housing, transport and education can meet, share information about needs and services, agree their aims and work out how to manage and deliver services to meet those aims.
